Abstract
By using Colombia as a case study, this dissertation exposes ethno-racial homogeneity on Latin American courts as a problem affecting Afro-descendants and judicial systems in the region, and to uncover its connection to formal and informal rules governing the composition and functioning of Latin American courts. This study differs from previous literature in its approach to the problem of minority underrepresentation in judicial bodies. We analyze this issue based on empirical evidence, collected mostly through the use of qualitative instruments. This analysis diverges from studies that have framed the issue of minority presence in public institutions purely from a normative perspective, or that have focused on regions of the Global North.
